Mediterranean Blue Crab Meat – 100 g
Portunus spp, caught in the Central Mediterranean Sea, FAO code 37.2.2

Origin
The Portunus spp, also known as the blue crab, is a decapod crustacean belonging to the Portunidae family.
Native to the Eastern Atlantic Ocean, it has spread in recent decades to the Mediterranean along the coasts of Italy and North Africa. Like many Lessepsian species, these crustaceans colonized the Mediterranean from the Red Sea after the engineer Ferdinand Lesseps designed the Suez Canal, connecting these two seas.
Characterized by a hard and robust shell of an intense blue color, which allows it to camouflage itself in its surrounding environment, it is a medium-small sized crab with a maximum carapace width of 12 cm. It is a species that generally lives in shallow waters and feeds on molluscs, crustaceans, and algae.
